What are coral reefs?

Coral reefs are colonies of micro creatures named pollups, little hair-like things that live on the top layer of the coral. The coral grows because when one generation dies they leave behind a hard, stony, branching structure made of limestone which later generations call home.

When is coral not a coral reef?

There are two types of coral, hard coral and soft coral. Hard coral species appear in reefs while soft coral species do not build reefs.
