After the Hubble Space Telescope launched in 1990, scientists discovered that its main mirror was slightly misshapen. Astronauts fixed it with corrective optics in 1993.

In 1995, the Hubble Space Telescope stared at a tiny, seemingly empty patch of sky and revealed thousands of galaxies in what's called the Hubble Deep Field image.
